Well or Water System

Well or Water System

$1,700.00

Description

Getting to the source. This gift helps a community bring a safe source of water closer to their village. It may include a well or borehole, hand pump, filtration system or storage pond, as well as community training to ensure the water source is maintained and benefits families for the long term.

How your gift helps

Alem lives with her family in the Ada District of Ethiopia. One of eight children, her parents farm a small pocket of land to make a living.

Alem’s family and the rest of her local community now have access to a clean and reliable water source after a new borehole was constructed in their village as part of a project by TEAR’s partner the Ethiopian Kale Heywet Church. Alem’s father is on the local committee that is trained to maintain and manage the borehole and make sure it keeps running smoothly so the community can enjoy the ongoing benefit of safe, clean water. They also pay a small fee to use the water, which even the poorest member of the community can afford. It gives a sense of ownership and helps contribute towards repairs and maintenance, ensuring it will be sustainable for the long term.

As part of the project, the family also learned how to build their own toilet, and about important hygiene issues like washing hands and proper food handling.

Your gift of a Well/Water System is contributing to projects like this one and making a difference in the lives of those facing poverty and marginalisation.

About our partner

The Ethiopian Kale Heywet Church (Kale Heywet means “Word of Life”) is a long-term TEAR partner in Ethiopia. They work with a number of village communities to implement water and sanitation projects which significantly improve people’s lives. They facilitate building infrastructure like gravity-fed water systems to improve access to safe water and train and empower communities to manage these systems. They also train the community in the importance of sanitation, supporting households to build their own toilets and improve their sanitation and overall health.
