Disability Access

Description
Improving access for all. Many people living with a disability face prejudice in their community and barriers that prevent them from participating in day-to-day activities. This gift educates communities about the different abilities of people in their community, dispels harmful myths about disability, and contributes to additional support and improved access, such as the building of wheelchair ramps into toilets and homes.
How your gift helps
Surendra works for the Disability Association of Myagdi (DAM), an organisation owned by people with a disability. TEAR’s partner the International Nepal Fellowship is helping to empower people with disabilities through organisations such as DAM.
Surendra is enthusiastic about this role in improving the quality of life for people with a disability in Nepal. Coming from a low-level economic background, he lost his hands in an accident when he was in Class 8 at school. He has experienced first-hand the negative attitudes from the community that can be faced by people with a disability.
Surendra works with around 45 Self-Help Groups made up of people with disabilities. INF connects people into these groups and helps them to access government entitlements, create opportunities for education and income generation activities. He says: “My disability is a great opportunity to serve others.”
The project also works with Village Development Rehabilitation Committees made up of community leaders with a disability who represent and advocate for others with a disability to local government. This gives an often-marginalised group a stronger voice in government decision-making, which will hopefully lead to positive changes for those living with a disability in Nepal.
Your gift of disability access is contributing to projects like this one and making a difference in the lives of those facing poverty and marginalisation.
About our partner
International Nepal Fellowship is a Christian organisation "serving the physical and spiritual needs of Nepali people". Its mission is to see Nepali people in Nepal and beyond experiencing fullness of life in Jesus Christ, and serving with others to promote health, peace, justice and harmony with God and his world.
