Safe Water

Safe Water

$25.00

Description

Clean water is essential for a healthy life. Help provide a household with safe water for drinking, cooking, watering vegetables and washing.

How your gift helps

This little girl lives in Mesreta, Southern Ethiopia. Her mum Gardise is on the committee of the water users’ group, which looks after the borehole in her village. She’s excited to be given a rare chance to splash fresh water on her hands and grab a drink, as children aren’t normally allowed near the borehole, due to it being such a precious resource.

Before the borehole was constructed by TEAR’s partner, the Ethiopian Kale Heywet Church, community members had to go to the river to collect water. Because the river water wasn’t clean, they had to dig in the sand on the riverbank to try to find good water to drink, which was very time-consuming.

With a borehole right in their village, the community now has access to fresh clean water, and time and energy for other activities. Their health has also improved as a result of learning more about better hygiene and sanitation practices as part of the project.

Gardise, the little girl’s mother, keeps the borehole clean and unlocks the compound in the morning and evening when people are able to get water from it. This is her first experience in community decision-making. She says: “Previously women were home wives. Now we have a great opportunity to go to different training and participate in other community issues.”

Your gift of Safe Water is contributing to projects like this one and making a difference in the lives of those facing poverty and marginalisation.

About our partner

The Ethiopian Kale Heywet Church (Kale Heywet means “Word of Life”) is a long-term TEAR partner in Ethiopia. They work with a number of village communities to implement water and sanitation projects. They facilitate building infrastructure like gravity-fed water systems to improve access to safe water and train and empower communities to manage these systems. They also train the community in the importance of sanitation, supporting households to build their own toilets and improve their sanitation and overall health.
